Pip Tompkin

Pip Tompkin has been a leader in the design community for almost three decades.  An award-winning designer whose creativity has garnered the attention and respect of his peers around the world. 

Pip currently performs several design leadership roles. He is the Chief Design Officer for The ThreeSixty Group overseeing design and engineering across twelve household lifestyle, technology and toy brands. In addition, Pip also holds the title of Chief Design Officer and Adviser to Lettuce Grow, a hydroponics and groundbreaking food system company. He is also the founder of ‘Assume Nothing’ a design and media agency located in Los Angeles, California.

Pip has worked with companies across the globe in Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, and the United States, in the fields of architecture, furniture and product design. He began his career working with the Advanced Design Team at Nortel, then moved into consulting with Therefore Design follows by Design Edge. Pip consulted to Dell for several years, developing products in the education, consumer, enterprise and gaming market, including the creation of the market leading Dell XPS product line. He further broadened his design pallet working with Colebrook Bosson Saunders Architects before joining the Nokia Design Team in 2005 where he developed the world’s first multimedia phones and served on a board, in Helsinki, to create strategies for Nokia’s Global portfolio.

Pip Tompkin Design Studio launched in 2008, an industrial design consultancy think tank.  Pip’s philosophy of ‘Assuming Nothing’ together with his ‘Design for the Unknown’ methodology, has earned him a reputation for developing paradigm shifting products, patents, packaging and brands for numerous organizations including HP, Microsoft, Arlo, Vizio, HTC, Toshiba, Canon, Polycom, iRobot, Belkin, and Twitter. During this time, he launched his own product brand, Mr. Pip. The first product to be introduced to the market was ‘Double Cross’, a highly awarded game designed to reunite families and friends lost through digital distractions. In 2018, both Pip Tompkin Studio and Mr. Pip were acquired by the ThreeSixty Group a 700+ employee strong company who own several large consumer brands, including FAO Schwarz, Sharper Image and Vornado. Pip’s mission, with the ThreeSixty Group, has been to develop and grow the business and brands through strategic design implementation.

A strong advocate for sustainability in design, Pip has been an integral part of the growth and innovative design for The Lettuce Grow project, an ambitious organization with the goal to educate and fundamentally change the way we grow and consume food. Through completely rethinking the food supply chain, the Lettuce Grow Project developed a solution to significantly reduce waste, water use, emissions, address global resource constraints and reduce our total carbon footprint. All while significantly improving the quality of food, improving our diet, wellness and health.

Pip’s latest endeavor ‘Assume Nothing Studios’, is a new consultancy that continues to question why do things need to be the way they are? Pip’s forward-thinking approach to design and brand has also recently expanded its reach into the field of film and television, lending his talents to elevate today’s expansive content.

Pip began his design education at Nottingham Trent University and studied Design for Industry at Northumbria University, graduating top of his class with a 1st Class BA Honors degree. He then earned a Master’s in Industrial Design from the Royal College of Art and was awarded a special examiners distinction. Pip is highly supportive of design education and makes time each year to work with universities and colleges locally and around the world.
